I resolve nothing

The whole business with New Year's resolutions sets people up for failure. The promise of a new year, fresh start, blah, blah. People get all optimistic about life and decide that this year they will lose weight, quit smoking, find a man, etc. Then by the end of January they've doffed the nicotine patch, gained five more pounds, and still spend their weekends alone, eating Ben and Jerry's and watching Sex and the City on DVD.

So I don't do resolutions. I set goals. Generally I don't tell anyone about my goals until I reach them or come close to reaching them. Adrian was the only person I told when I joined Weight Watchers three years ago. Inspired by Charlize Theron's transformation in Monster and subsequent transformation back into hottie, I decided to see what would happen if I worked hard at losing weight. Now, I didn't turn until Charlize Theron unfortunately, but I did lose about 40 lbs in four months. Plus, I kept my mouth shut about it until people started to notice I looked slimmer. Unlike conventional wisdom that says the more you share a personal goal with other the more likely you are to suceed, I find that I do better when I keep my mouth shut and do the bragging with I've actually crossed the finish line.

Having said that, I am tempting fate and disclosing my two goals for at least this first quarter of 2006 (Am I really still in Corporate Hell mentality?):

1. Run the Monument Avenue 10K on March 29: Considering I've only ever run in 5k's before, this is a big step up for this non-running runner gal. Hopefully the training I put in to prepare for the race will help me shed my last 10 lbs of baby fat. I don't have a particular time goal in mind for the race, just that I run without stopping, falling, or passing out.

2. Blog more often: In some recent conversations, it has come to my attention that there are some people (outside of my husband) who read my blog. I thought it would be nice to actually give these people something new to read more often than every few weeks. Plus, I get to brush up on my typing and verbal skills. My goal is a new post every other day. Don't hold me to that timeline; Little A has a way of sabotaging any type of plans I make.

Anyway, I'll revisit my goals in April, see how miserably I've failed, set new ones and just not tell anyone those.

Oh, I'm totally digging the new My Chemical Romance album, The Black Parade. It's really good. Really, really good. It's teh best.

I read! I'm bad about actually blogging myself. Several of my brother's friends from school read it and they always respond. Maybe I'll try to do better, too.
